There is no single best month for Skardu, because Skardu contains three different trips: a town, lakes and forts trip; a high plains trip to Deosai; and a trekking gateway trip to K2. The town trip runs April to October. Deosai runs, in practice, June to September. Winter Skardu is a different, quieter, colder trip for travellers who accept road and flight disruption. Planning by month, and by which Skardu you want, avoids the common mistake of booking a Deosai trip in a month when Deosai is closed.
01April to October: the main town season
April brings spring to Skardu town and the lower valleys, with blossom in the orchards and the lakes and forts accessible. May to September is the core visiting season: lakes, Shigar and Khaplu, the cold desert and the town's hotels and restaurants are all operating. October brings autumn colour, clearer air and fewer visitors, but nights are cold and the high routes begin to close. For a first Skardu trip focused on lakes, forts and desert, May, June, September and early October are the most reliable choices; July and August are warmer and busier, and they are also the months when Deosai and the K2 gateway are in full operation.
- April: spring, blossom, town and lower valleys
- May-June: core season opens, Deosai opens in June
- July-August: warmest, busiest, all routes operating
- September-October: autumn colour, quieter, colder nights
02June to September: Deosai, and only Deosai's window
Deosai National Park sits around 4,100 metres, and its plains, wildflowers and wildlife are accessible by 4x4 only in the summer window, normally June to September. Outside that window, snow closes the high routes, and a Deosai day trip is not a realistic plan. That matters for booking: a Skardu tour in April, May or October can be an excellent lakes and forts tour, but it cannot honestly be sold as a Deosai tour. Check the year's opening before promising Deosai, and build the itinerary around Skardu town if Deosai is closed.
- Deosai open: normally June to September
- Deosai closed: snow on the high routes outside summer
- Best Deosai months: July and August for flowers and access
- Skardu town: still excellent in April, May and October
03Winter Skardu: a separate trip
Winter in Skardu, roughly November to March, brings snow, cold, and a much quieter town. Some travellers seek it for winter photography, snow landscapes and a slower pace, and a winter Skardu page exists for that trip. It is not a substitute for a summer trip: flights and roads are more disrupted, Deosai is closed, and some hotels and services reduce operations. Winter travellers should plan buffer days, warm clothing, and a flexible itinerary, and should confirm in the quote which hotels and routes are operating in winter.
- Winter: November to March, snow and quiet
- Flights and roads: more disruption, buffer days essential
- Deosai: closed in winter
- Suits: winter photography and slow travel, not first-time summer sightseeing

FAQs
When is cherry blossom in Skardu?
Spring blossom is an April phenomenon in the lower valleys, but exact weeks vary by year and altitude. Ask for the year's blossom timing rather than a fixed date.
Can I visit Deosai in October?
Sometimes early October, sometimes not. It depends on that year's snow. Confirm Deosai access in the quote; do not assume it.
Is Skardu good in winter?
For winter photography and quiet travel, yes, with buffer days and realistic expectations. For lakes, forts and Deosai, no: visit April to October.
